Open Innovation in the Agri-Food Sector: Perspectives from a Systematic Literature Review and a Structured Survey in MSMEs

Open innovation, understood as a strategy for business competitiveness, has experienced growing relevance, even in traditional economic sectors, such agri-food. This article focuses on the trends and challenges of open innovation applied to agri-food field, based two approaches, Systematic Literature Review (SLR) structured survey, answered mainly by micro-, small-, medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). For SLR, Scopus bibliographic database was chosen. Documents were filtered type, novelty, impact factor journal (based Scimago Rank). The final selection included 50 articles that deeply analyzed. In addition, survey 57 companies from department Nariño (Colombia), establishing diagnosis extent openness their collaborative barriers capacities. review’s results revealed marked European dominance this research field. Product co-creation, eco-innovation, bioeconomy are main fields interest application innovation. identified related intellectual property rights effective communication between stakeholders. successful statistically significant correlation performance collaboration with external partners. As conclusion, an approach can provide dynamism cohesion systems.
